Diese Seite entstand im Kontext des Seminars Nihon Ryo-Wiki.

Jede Geschichte im Nihon ryōiki 日本霊異記 trägt das Wort en 縁 / 緣 im Titel, was für das setsuwa-Genre 説話 nicht unüblich ist und zum Beispiel auch im Senjū hyakuen-kyō 撰集百縁経 oder Shūkyō yōshū konzonron vorkommt. Auch im Begriff engi 縁起, der sich als generische Bezeichnung für Tempel- und Schreinchroniken eingebürgert hat, kommt das Zeichen im Sinne von Herkunft bzw. Herkunftsgeschichte vor.

Koto no moto

Izumoji verwendet für dieses Schriftzeichen die Lesung koto no moto 事の元 (dt.: „Grund der Sache“), die er nicht aus dem Ryōiki, sondern dem Nihon shoki 日本書紀 entnommen hat, in dem die Phrase 此其縁也 („Dies ist dessen en“) mit コレソノコトノモトナリ (kore sono koto no moto nari, „Dies ist dieser Sache Grund“) glossiert ist. Verwendet wird die Phrase, um Bräuche der Gegenwart mit Ereignissen aus der Vorgeschichte zu erklären.

Zum Beispiel: Izanagi 伊邪那岐命 folgt Izanami 伊邪那美命 in die Unterwelt, darf sie dort aber nicht ansehen. Als er das Gebot bricht, indem er an einer Kammspitze ein Licht entzündet, sieht er die von Maden zerfressene Izanami. Das Nihon shoki schließt daraus: „Heute wirft man nachts keinen Kamm weg und verwendet auch kein einzelnes Licht. Das ist der Grund dieser Sache.“

入於黃泉	and entered the Land of Yomi.

共語時	they conversed together,

吾夫君尊	"My lord and husband,
何來之晚也	why is thy coming so late?
吾已食泉之灶矣	I have already eaten of the cooking-furnace of Yomi.
雖然吾當寢息	Nevertheless, I am about to lie down to rest.
請勿視之	I pray thee, do not thou look at me."
伊奘諾尊不聽	Izanami no Mikoto did not give ear to her,
陰取湯津爪櫛	But secretly took his many-toothed comb and,
牽折其雄柱	breaking off its end tooth,
以為秉炬	made of it a torch,
而見之者	and looked at her.
則膿沸蟲流	Putrefying matter had gushed up, and maggots swarmed.
今世人夜忌一片之火	This is why people at the present day avoid using a single light at night,
又夜忌擲櫛	and also avoid throwing away a comb at night.
